Artist Statement

Why design?

I’m Mark Zhu, a Chinese American designer who creates synesthetic designs that combine different sensory experiences into images.Growing up imperfectly bilingual, I spoke an incoherent mix of Mandarin and English with my immigrant parents and often struggled to get my point across. I relied on sketches to communicate with my parents. Visual translation proved valuable in interlingual exchange, and I later realized that my art could translate between sensory experiences, too.Experienced in music and cooking, I’ve discovered that I can visualize various sounds and scents. I also have riveting dreams nearly every night, giving me a sandbox to explore surreal subject matters. Listening to ambient sounds and smelling fragrant items while I work are essential to my creative process, as this intersensory experience allows me to tap into the constant swirl of images in my head. Resultantly, my designs today are rooted in and feature a wide variety of different types of translation of sounds, scents, and languages into images.I use a variety of applications like Procreate, Photoshop, and Illustrator, as well as techniques like illustration, photography, and 3D modeling to design graphic covers and logos. I believe written and spoken language should never constrain an idea, so if there isn’t a way to say something, I’ll design one.

Send me your design request via email or Instagram DM. Let’s get to know each other!2. Brainstorm concepts
We’ll think of ideas, and I’ll make some initial sketches. The final pricing is determined based on the complexity of the initial concept.3. Send payment
Once we agree on to work together, I'll send an invoice for the total amount. Please pay before I start creating. I accept Zelle (preferred) and PayPal, and other methods are available on request.4. Send any references or files you want incorporated
If you want any photos, logos, or other graphics incorporated into your design, send them to me via wetransfer.com. For references, just DM on Instagram or email them to me.5. Receive snapshots along the way
I’ll keep you updated on every step of the design process and will ask for your input so the design is 100% how you want it to look.6. Receive your design, and make revisions
Revisions are an important step of the design process. I’ll make adjustments to your design based on your feedback until it’s perfect.7. Approve your design, and show it to the world.
After you approve your design, it’s finished and ready for the world to see!
